People hear fashion and think of high end designers, they hear fashion and think of models, they hear fashion and they think –Milan, Paris, $$$ and everything glamorous.
Fashion fashion fashionnnn… what even IS that?
Oxford Dictionary defines Fashion as — a popular or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration, or behaviour, a manner of doing something.
Yesss I know this 👏🏽 is 👏🏽 not 👏🏽 a 👏🏽lecture 👏🏽hall but, stay with me — the definition is critical to the points I’m trying to make.
Anyway so according to Google’s report for 2018, the top four searches were — ‘1980s fashion’, ‘grunge fashion’, ‘1990s fashion’, and ‘2000s fashion’ …it’s pretty obvious then that wave everyone was on in 2018 was retro revival.
What could be the cause of that? 🤔
Well, Vogue thinks the activities from the runway was the main influence on mainstream fashion searches, seeing as Versace, Marc Jacobs and Prada all brought back some of their iconic fashion items to the runway this year.
I’ll explain in a bit how fashion brands were able to tap into the ‘retro/nostalgic’ trend to position their brands in the hearts of their customers.
But first, pree the fashion brands that topped Google’s search list in 2018
- Fashion Nova
- Louis Vuitton
- Alexander McQueen
- Dolce & Gabbana
I mean just look at Fashion Nova, trumping all these elite and decades old fashion brands to rise to the top of Google’s search query for 2018 — partnering with Cardi was probably one of the best business decisions this year, also their array of celebrity ambassadors who take regular but glossy pictures of their Fashion Nova fits.
What these people represent is a culture, they represent what’s popular, they also represent what’s trendy — don’t forget the fashion definition I plugged in earlier — because we experience social media, and these celebrities create beautiful memories with their Fashion Nova fit, every time we have an event, or a date and we wanna look cute, we go to Google to search out Fashion Nova looks we can be inspired by — these celebrities have successfully created — Nostalgia.
