Thanks to our friends at One Wild Card, creative agency led by Kayode Olowu, we finally got our hands on the long-lost Whatsapp group chat between the British monarchy and the founding fathers of Nigeria on the early hours of October 1st 1960, just before Nigeria’s Independence was officially declared.
This Whatsapp chat was between the principal political actors of the time, namely Queen Elizabeth II, Governor-General Robertson, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and the legendary Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Fela’s mother!
This discovery is remarkable, not only because it reveals an untold side of the story we grew up with, but also shows the fun, naughty and rather playful side of some of these iconic figures that us millennials only managed to see on black and white film clips from decades ago.
If you’ve ever wondered the true story and juicy details of how Nigeria got her independence, then here’s your chance. And we’ve got One Wild Card to thank for that.
PS: Please don’t ask us how Whatsapp, the internet and mobile phones managed to exist in 1960 Nigeria, long before even American got them. That question should be directed at One Wild Card.
